St. Martin's Lantern Parade | November 14th, 5 pm
Dear Lower School Parents,
Saint Martin's Day is the feast day of Saint Martin of Tours, celebrated on 11 November in the liturgical year.
In some German and Dutch-speaking towns, there are nighttime processions of children carrying paper lanterns or turnip lanterns and singing songs of St Martin. These processions are known in German as "Laternelaufen".
Our Lower School lantern parade in honor of St. Martin will take place this year on Thursday, November 14, at 5:00 pm.
We will remember St. Martin’s generosity and celebrate together. Further information and a sign-up will be sent out soon. All children in Pre-K – 3rd grade and their siblings are warmly invited to attend. Students in these classes will be making lanterns at school.
Lantern Crafting Event and Open House
Families interested in joining GISNY are warmly invited to the Open House and lantern-crafting event on November 7 to prepare for the parade. Please feel free to share this information with friends.
Calling all bakers
Traditionally, this celebration includes sharing a Saint Martin’s bun—a delicious pastry that brings joy to children and families. We are looking for volunteers to help bake the Saint Martin’s buns.
Please contact Martina Hess to volunteer at mhess@gisny.org. She will provide the recipe. If possible, the buns should be baked on November 14th, as they taste best when consumed fresh.
Let’s pass on the spirit of Saint Martin together and bring smiles to children’s faces!
We look forward to celebrating together!
