KARLYN TABB
DEPUTY head of Lower School

Email Ms. Tabb

My name is Karlyn Tabb and I've been a part of the GISNY community since 2004. I started out as a part-time English teacher for primary school. This quickly grew into more and more classes, eventually culminating in a full-time job at the school. Since that time I have been teaching the students from the entry level to the 4th grade.

In February 2022, I took over the position of Head of Lower School on behalf of Dr. Simone Brümmer and continue to teach English in the first grade. Since this year, I continue to support our new Head of Lower School, Sabine Maiberger in the role of Deputy Head of School.

I run the English department of the primary school, have worked for STAC (teachers' and administrators' advocacy group) for many years and organize the annual book fair and author visits. And occasionally I support as a temporary worker in the language school.

I grew up in New City, New York (Rockland County), received my B.A. in German Studies from SUNY Binghamton (now Binghamton University), spent my junior year abroad at the University of Graz, Austria, worked for a year as a teaching assistant in Innsbruck and earned my M.A. in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Hunter College in New York City.

My interest in German culture stemmed from my paternal grandmother, who was born in Germany and immigrated to New York as a young woman. I started taking German classes in high school and continued with my studies. Before I decided to become a teacher, I worked for a number of German companies.

For me, the German International School New York is a wonderful place to work in an international environment. I live in White Plains with my husband and two children.
