Head of School

My name is Volker Ovelgönne, and I chose to pursue a career in teaching in grade 11—a decision I made independently, despite coming from a family deeply dedicated to education, with both parents, my sister, and my brother all educators, three of whom have served as Heads of School.

After graduating from high school in Papenburg in northern Germany, I studied English and Latin at the University of Münster. From 1991 to 1992, I worked as a foreign language assistant at three comprehensive schools in Kent, England, while living with a Welsh family near London. Following my studies in 1995, I completed my teacher training at Ricarda-Huch-Schule (RHS) in Braunschweig and then began my teaching career in Gifhorn. Four years later, I returned to Braunschweig as Head of Latin and, in 2004, started training new English teachers. In 2007, I became Head of Middle School at RHS, and in 2017, I was honored to become Head of School at the Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Braunschweig. In August 2024, I joined the vibrant GISNY community in White Plains as Head of School, a role I am thrilled and honored to hold.

I am married with two children, ages 14 and 16, and spending quality time with my family is my greatest joy. Together, we enjoy traveling, playing games, and staying active. I also have a passion for music, both listening and performing, and I value time with friends.

For me, there is no more rewarding and meaningful endeavor than guiding young people on their journey to adulthood and supporting their pursuit of academic excellence.
