Welcome Back to School! A Fresh Start at GISNY!
Sabine Maiberger

Two days ago, the 2024/25 school year began, and our halls are once again filled with the sounds of laughter, learning, and the familiar rhythms of school life. Whether you are a returning student, a new family joining us for the first time, or a member of our dedicated faculty and administration, we are thrilled to welcome you to a new academic year.

A New Year, A New Beginning

Every school year is like the start of a new year — a time for fresh beginnings, new goals, and resolutions. This period of transition brings with it a unique blend of emotions: excitement for what lies ahead, curiosity about new challenges, and perhaps a bit of nervousness, especially for those who are joining us from afar or transitioning to a new grade.

For our returning students, we hope the summer provided you with a chance to relax, explore new interests, and recharge. As you return, you bring with you the experiences and lessons of last year, ready to build upon them. To our new students and families who have just moved to the US or are joining us at different grade levels, we are here to support you every step of the way. Your presence enriches our community, and we are eager to learn from you just as much as we hope you will learn from us.

New Resolutions for Everyone

Just like the resolutions we make at the beginning of the calendar year, the start of a school year is a perfect time to set goals. What do you want to achieve this year? Maybe it's mastering a new subject, joining a club, making new friends, or simply challenging yourself to try something new. For teachers, it's about inspiring and nurturing young minds, finding innovative ways to engage students, and fostering an environment where every child feels valued and supported. For parents, it might mean finding ways to be more involved in your child's education or supporting them in their academic and personal growth.

Embracing Change and Growth

Change is a constant in our lives, and nowhere is it more evident than in a school environment. Each new school year brings change—not just in grade levels or curriculum but also in how we view the world and ourselves. This is a place where every community member can grow, where learning goes beyond textbooks and classrooms, and where curiosity is encouraged.

Our international German school is committed to creating a welcoming environment that values diversity, inclusivity, and each student's unique contributions. Whether you are learning a new language, adjusting to a new culture, or navigating the challenges of adolescence, know that you are not alone. We are a community, and together, we will make this year memorable and successful.

Tips for a Smooth Transition Back to School

Preparing for a new school year can feel overwhelming, but with a few simple steps, we can all get back into the rhythm of school life smoothly:

  1. Re-establish Routines: Start adjusting bedtimes and morning routines to align with the school schedule. Consistent sleep and wake times can help everyone feel more rested and ready for the day.

  2. Talk About Feelings: Take time to talk with your children about how they feel about the new school year. Are they excited, nervous, or a bit of both? Open conversations can help ease anxieties and set a positive tone.

  3. Prepare Materials Together: Involve your children in organizing their school supplies. Let them choose their backpacks, notebooks, and other materials. This will help them feel prepared and give them a sense of ownership and responsibility.

  4. Visit Friends and Family: Reconnecting with friends and family before school starts can help ease the transition. Encourage your children to catch up with classmates or neighbors. For new families, reaching out to community members can help create a sense of belonging.

  5. Reach Out to New Families: If you’re a returning family, consider reaching out to new families to welcome them. A friendly hello or an offer to answer questions can make a big difference.

  6. Stay Positive and Encouraging: Emphasize the new school year's opportunities. Encourage your children to set personal goals and support them in their efforts to achieve them.

  7. Create a Friendly Learning Environment: Set up a quiet, organized space for homework and study. Having a dedicated area can help students focus and develop good study habits.

Looking Forward Together

Welcome back, and here's to a fantastic year ahead!
