Nationwide Read Aloud Day at the GISNY November 15th is nationwide read aloud day in Germany – and GISNY will participate! DIE ZEIT, the Stiftung Lesen (foundation for reading) and the Deutsche Bahn Stiftung (foundation of the German railway company) has initiated the 16th read aloud day. This year's motto is "Sports and Movement". The intention behind this day is to promote interest in children's literature and the joy of reading.
Therefore, the Lower School will participate in this project with the support of Heiko Schwarz from the German Consulate in New York. Keeping our international background in mind, we will read in German as well as in English! „Wir gehen jetzt auf Bärenjagd" by Michael Rosen, "Rennschwein Rudi Rüssel" by Uwe Timm, "Players in Pigtails" by Shana Corey and "I am Yoga" by Susan Verde are just a few examples of the books we will read. We are glad to experience this exciting, funny and relaxing time with all the Lower School students!

New Field Hockey Program GISNY will be hosting an after-school Field Hockey program for girls in 6th through 8th grade. We are lucky enough to have a parent volunteer to help build our program in the off-season. Felix Buchmann, who is a parent of 3 children at our school, has professional experience in coaching and playing field hockey. He will be hosting team practices for our girls on Friday afternoons at 2.05 pm in the GISNY gymnasium. The first practice will be held on Friday, December 6. If girls are interested in playing on the team for next season, this will be beneficial and a critical aspect in helping build the team and program. We are holding these practices in the off-season in hopes to sustain interest and be prepared for a full season with more games next year. Players will learn the fundamentals, game play, and strategies involved in playing the sport and working as a team. If your child is interested in playing on the Field Hockey team next year and would like to participate these off-season practices: 1. Please sign-up on bulletin board in gym lobby 2. Complete and return the enrollment form to Mr. DiBetta or Ms. Wieborg The school will provide field hockey sticks, but the players will be responsible for their own mouth guards, shin-guards, and protective goggles (eye-wear). John DiBetta, Head of Athletics

With almost no rain and beautiful music, we celebrated our annual St. Martin festival. Many wonderful lanterns lit the way around the school. We celebrated in a circle of light with the traditional St. Martins play. We finished that nice festival with the delicious "Weckmänner". What do we celebrate on St. Martin's? Martinstag (St. Martin's Day) is the holy day of St. Martin of Tours, a Catholic saint. Originally, Martinstag was celebrated in the Catholic areas of Germany and Austria but it has now spread to the more Protestant areas as well. Children carry their lighted lanterns, singing traditional songs like Laterne, Laterne and Ich gehe mit meiner Laterne. As a reminder of St. Martin's generosity, the "Weckmann" (bread in the shape of a man) is shared on this holiday.
