We benefit greatly from the wealth of experience, creativity and know-how that GIS parents bring to our school. Included here are several ways you can get involved. Not only will you get to know other parents, you'll also making a positive and lasting impact on your children's school experience.
Board of Trustees & Membership in the Corporation
All parents are encouraged to become annual members of the Corporation, which entitles them to run for and vote for Board of Trustees
membership. Parents or legal guardians of a new
student will become members of the GISNY Corporation unless membership is expressly declined on the Enrollment Agreement in the initial year. Annual dues of $50.00 per person will be added to the tuition invoice.
If parent(s) initially opt out of becoming a member of the corporation, a written application
must be submitted and approved by the Board of Trustees.
Parents also volunteer to help the GIS community on the Parents' Association
(referred to in German as the "Elternbeirat", or EBR for short). At the beginning of each school year, the parents of each classroom elect two Class Representatives. These Class Representatives sit on the Parents' Association and serve as liaisons between the parents, faculty, Administration and Board. PA Representatives also organize a wide array of social and cultural events throughout the year -- like the Art Fair, hugely popular Weihnachtsbasar, Flea Markets, and much more! -- coordinate classroom parties and special activities, and volunteer in countless other ways to make ours a vibrant school community.
The parent-organized Newcomers' Club
welcomes new families to the school with information on things to do in and around New York City and organizes regular get-togethers and site-seeing excursions.
Swiss Parents' Association
Swiss families are encouraged to participate in the Swiss Parents' Association
. The Swiss Parents' Association is dedicated to furthering the interests and concerns of Swiss parents and students. It also organizes a weekly after school lessons for Swiss students from Kindergarten/ES through Grade 5, and once a month it hosts a Swiss-themed event for students in Grades 6 through 12. All lessons and events are led by a Swiss teacher who speaks “Schwyzerdütsch”.
GIS Locals Group
Finally, parents who live permanently in Westchester, Fairfield and Manhattan counties get together socially as part of the GIS Locals Group. For more information and to be added to the group's email list, please contact Dr. Marc Schlueter
